“Happy Easter!”...
... it was already the beginning of February 2020, because the international confectionery fair had invited to Cologne for the 50th time and set the stage for the publication of what is arguably the cutest product ever designed by PROJEKTER Industrial Design using 3D modelling.
Are you wondering what we as industrial designers have to do with sweets & baked goods?
A whole lot! Because production-friendly design should not only take place for consumer electronics and capital goods. Until a few years ago, baking and casting molds for Easter Bunny, Santa Claus & Co., were made exclusively from modelling clay by a master pastry chef or sculptor.
A process that takes a lot of time when developing the design, in particular design variants, and the subsequent creation of the tool for machine production.
Even in the food industry, progress and digitization are unstoppable. Our partner, Kuchenmeister GmbH from Soest, recognized this. With first-class baked goods, they are the market leader and a traditional company that is constantly evolving. For Easter, the company offers, among other things, a sponge cake dusted with decorative powder in the form of Easter lambs. 3D scan technology has already been used here to digitize the product.
In collaboration with Kuchenmeister GmbH, we designed an Easter bunny in 2019 that fits into the Easter lambs product range. After the initial 2D sketches and consultations, our 3D artists implemented various design variants using a program for freeform 3D modeling.

Our digital process made it possible to guarantee flawless demoulding of the cake even during 3D modelling. As a result, undercuts could be identified and corrected at an early stage using analysis tools.
Another advantage of the digital 3D model is the immediate determination of the volume and mass distribution of both mold halves, which is essential for a good baked product.
With the help of computer-generated renderings and our in-house 3D printer, a suitable design could be efficiently developed and evaluated and implemented by our partner and the mold manufacturer.
We wish you a happy Easter and bon appétit 😊
